Coming from island living to the Somerset countryside was a BIG change. My life, up until our move, was on the tiny Island of Bermuda which is smack dab in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Just 53.3 square kilometres (20.6 square miles) – really! Surrounded by the ocean and beautiful pink sand beaches to fields of cows and sheep. I do love Somerset and find country living absolutely delightful but there are times when I do feel a little homesick for my Island Home. When those feelings come along I always do the same thing – make up a batch of Bermuda Johnny Bread.
It seems that more and more people are choosing to holiday with their four-legged friends these days. When we opened The Old Stables we knew we would be welcoming a puppy of our own into the family so the choice to go ‘dog friendly’ wasn’t one that we debated for very long!
Jasper, our 9 month old Golden Retriever, arrived at The Old Stables in June, 2016. Since his arrival we have welcomed no less than 20 dogs to the B&B. All shapes, sizes and colours and all perfectly delightful (with lovely, well behaved owners too!).
We decided that relocating countries, buying a house and getting a business up and running wasn’t quite enough excitement for one year so we’re embarking on our next project – a barn conversion! Continue reading
…otherwise known as Jasper! Broadcombe King of the Helm is his pedigree name – a bit grand for this little puppy, if you ask me 🙂 Jasper’s been home with us for about a month now, so I thought it was high time that he had his proper introduction!
We had a fantastic day out recently at The Royal Bath & West Show in Shepton Mallet. Happily for us the showground is an easy 5 minute drive away from us and we had an easy run through to the show with no parking problems!
On moving to the UK I found some confusion surrounding the pancake. Now to me a pancake is a large, fluffy, saucer shaped disc that you stack. You could do a polite pair or even a cheeky trio or quad but you definitely don’t have just one! You slather butter and maple syrup all over them while they are warm and have a side of crispy bacon (sometimes also drowning in the maple syrup if you’re not one of those people who is slightly suspicious about the sweet/savoury combo thing). I’ll have my crispy bacon by the side thanks. But this is not the case here in the UK which I found out when I added ‘pancakes’ to my breakfast menu. Continue reading
